ARTICLES: INTRODUCTION

You are here: morphology > articles

In grammar the article is a variable particle situated before the noun, which specifies its meaning.

The article takes the gender (masculine or feminine) and the number (singular or plural) from the noun.

The form of the article depends on the first letter of the noun.

Examples:
"Il tavolo"
In this case the first letter of the noun is a consonant and the form of the singular masculine article is: IL

"L'amico"
In this case the first letter of the noun is a vowel and the form of the singular masculine article is: L'

"Lo stadio"
In this case the first letter of the noun is the group ST and the form of the singular masculine article is: LO

In Italian there are two different kinds or articles:

  • determinativi  (determinative, indicate precisely the noun)

    Example:
    "La casa, il tavolo..."

  • indeterminativi  (indefinite, indicate generically the noun)

    Example:
    "Una casa, un tavolo..."

Go to: determined > indetermined
