SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS

You are here: morphology > conjunctions > subordinating

The subordinating conjunctions introduce a less important subordinating sentence dependent from an other sentence called supporting.

Example:
"Marco corre perché è in ritardo."

The subordinating conjunctions are divided according to their meaning and function in:

  • predicative  (when they introduce a declaration or an explanation)

    Example:
"Voglio che tu faccia questa cosa per me."

  • final  (when they explain the purpose of the supporting sentence)

    Example:
"Grido perché tu riesca a sentirmi."

  • causal  (when they indicate the reason of the supporting sentence)

    Example:
    "Tremo perché ho freddo."

  • temporal  (when they explain when the action of the supporting happens)

    Example:
    "Uscirai quando avrai finito."

  • adversative  (when they introduce a contrast with the supporting sentence)

    Example:
"Invece di guardare la tv perché non leggi un libro?"

  • consecutive  (when they indicate a consequence)

    Example:
"Corre così forte che cadrà di sicuro."

  • concessive  (when they indicate a concession although there’s a problem)

    Example:
"Sebbene mi piaccia dipingere, non sono molto bravo."

  • conditional  (when they express the necessary condition for the supporting)

    Example:
    "Verrei, se solo potessi."

  • comparative  (when they introduce a confront with the supporting)

    Example:
"Il David di Michelangelo è bello come dicono."

  • modal  (when they indicate the manner the action of the supporting happens)

    Example:
"Parla come se non conoscesse la lingua."

  • interrogative  (when they introduce a question)

    Example:
"Mi chiedo perché non sia venuto."

  • exceptional  (when they introduce an exception)

    Example:
"Maria sa fare tutto tranne che cucinare."

Go to: conditional > consecutive > predicative > exceptional > final > interrogative > modal > temporal > adversative > causal > comparative > concessive
