NAMES AND NOUNS

You are here: morphology > nouns

The name or noun is that variable part of the speech that indicates everything existing in reality (people, objects, plants, animals, facts, events, actions) or that can be thought or heard (ideas, concepts, feelings, sensations).

These are the main features of nouns:

  • usually it's preceded by an article

    Example:
    "il cane"

  • it's variable in gender (masculine or feminine) and in the number (singular or plural)

    Example:
"il cane, la gatta, i cani, le gatte"

  • it determines the gender and the number of the parts that are referred to it (articles, adjectives, pronouns)

    Example:
    "la stanza, le stanze"

  • ·if it's subject it also determines the person of the verb

    Example:
"Il cane abbaia, le gatte miagolano."

In Italian nouns are divided in:

  • regular  (they have fixed rules for singular and plural)

    Example:
    "cane - cani"

  • irregular  (they don’t have fixed rules for singular and plural)

    Example:
"cittā - cittā, uovo - uova"
