RELATIVE PRONOUNS

The relative pronouns are particular pronouns because they have a double function: they substitute a noun, but they also relate two sentences where there is the same noun.

Example:
"Marco ha una casa. La casa è nuova. --> Marco ha una casa che è nuova."
In this example the third sentence results from the union of the first two with the relative pronoun in the place of the word 'casa'.

The relative pronouns are 4, with different forms and functions:

• CHE  (is used only in function of the subject or the direct complement)

  Example:
  "La donna che parla è mia moglie."

• IL QUALE  (is used as subject, direct complement, indirect complement)

  Example:
  "È arrivato il cliente con il quale hai parlato ieri?"

• CUI  (is only used as indirect complement)

  Example:
  "La donna di cui ti parlo è mia moglie."

• CHI  (has the function of mixed pronoun)

  Example:
  "Chi vuole prendere il vino alzi la mano."
