IRREGULARITY OF THE SIMPLE PAST INDICATIVE

The simple past has many irregular forms.
It is possible to identify the verb groups which have a similar behavior.

Note:
In general, it can be said that the irregular verbs at the past participle form are irregular, as well, even at the simple past tense.

Attention:
The irregularity of the simple past is verified only at the 1st and 3rd person singular and at the 3rd person plural
The 2nd person singular, the 1st and the 2nd person plural are regular.

Example:
"Presi, prendesti, prese, prendemmo, prendeste, presero."
Simple past of the verb prendere (to take)

They lose only one consonant before the infinitive verb ending and add -SI, -SE, -SERO:

• pre -ndere ---> pre -si, pre -se, pre -sero  (the other forms are regular: prendesti, prendemmo, prendeste))

  Example:
  "A 15 anni Marco prese la decisione di studiare il pianoforte."

Note:
They act as prendere: rimanere, porre, chiedere, nascondere, rispondere, volgere, sciogliere, togliere, scegliere, cogliere, scendere, rendere, ridere, radere, chiudere, tendere, decidere, dividere, esplodere, evadere.

They lose only one consonant before the infinitive verb ending and add -SI, -SE, -SERO:

• giun -gere ---> giun -si, giun -se, giun -sero  (the other forms are regular: giungesti, giungemmo, giungeste)

  Example:
  "La notizia della sua partenza giunse inaspettata."

Note:
They act as giungere: spengere, spingere, spandere, giungere, cingere, piangere, tingere, dipingere, porgere, scorgere, risorgere, sorgere, stringere.

They lose the consonant or group of consonants before the infinitive verb ending and add -SSI, -SSE, -SSERO:

• le -ggere ---> le -ssi, le -sse, le -ssero  (the other forms are regular: leggesti, legemmo, leggeste)

  Example:
  "Lessi un bellissimo libro."

Note:
They act as leggere: dire, trarre, condurre, friggere, reggere, scrivere, scindere, concedere, succedere, discutere.

Other verbs which add -SSI, -SSE, -SSERO are: scuotere ---> scossi, muovere ---> mossi, dirigere ---> diressi, cuocere ---> cossi.

They are irregular, but are not part of any family:

• essere ---> fui

  Example:
  "Fummo felici del tuo arrivo a Roma."

• vedere ---> vidi

  Example:
  "Tutti lo videro con il suo nuovo look."

• mettere ---> misi

  Example:
  "Il postino mise le lettere nella cassetta."

• fare ---> feci

  Example:
  "In quel campionato la squadra fece una bellissima figura."

• venire ---> venni

  Example:
  "Tutti vennero alla sua festa."

• sapere ---> seppi

  Example:
  "Solo anni dopo seppi del tuo successo."

• dare ---> detti

  Example:
  "Marco mi dette la bella notizia."

• stare ---> stetti

  Example:
  "Marco stette ad aspettare Anna per un'ora."

• cadere ---> caddi

  Example:
  "Marco cadde mentre scendeva le scale."

• bere ---> bevvi

  Example:
  "I clienti bevvero un ottimo vino."

• vivere ---> vissi

  Example:
  "Marco visse tre mesi a Roma."

• rompere ---> ruppi

  Example:
  "Giocando, il bambino ruppe il vetro."

• crescere ---> crebbe

  Example:
  "Marco crebbe in un ambiente sano."

• avere ---> ebbi

  Example:
  "I bambini ebbero un regalo per Natale."

• nascere ---> nacqui  (and in the same group: tacere, giacere, piacere)

  Example:
  "Marco nacque a Milano."
