CONCORDANCE OF SUBJUNCTIVE SENTENCES

In some kinds of dependent sentences we use the subjunctive. This depends on the form of the main sentence.

The subjunctive is used after verbs that express:

• command

  Example:
  "Voglio che tu faccia questo esercizio."

  Other command verbs: ordino che, impongo che, esigo che, pretendo che, richiedo che.

• feelings

  Example:
  "Mi fa piacere che tu sia qui."

  Other feeling verbs: mi dispiace che, sono felice che, sono contento che, mi fa paura che, mi stupisce che.

• opinion

  Example:
  "Penso che voi siate brave persone."

  Other opinion verbs: credo che, suppongo che, ritengo che, (mi) sembra che, (mi) pare che, immagino che.

• desire

  Example:
  "Spero che il problema sia risolto."

  Other desire verbs: mi auguro che, voglio che, mi aspetto che.

After a main sentence with:

• the conditional mood

  Example:
  "Vorrei che tu fossi qui adesso."

  In this case we only use the imperfect and perfect subjunctive.

In relative sentence that:

• are introduced by a verb that wants the subjunctive

  Example:
  "Voglio una casa che sia comoda e luminosa."

• are preceded by a relative superlative

  Example:
  "Carlo è la persona più simpatica che io conosca."

• are preceded by some particular indefinite adjectives or pronouns

  Example:
  "Non esiste nessuno che sappia la strada per la stazione?"

  Other indefinite adjective or pronouns that want the subjunctive: niente, nulla, chiunque, dovunque.

• have a hypothetical or eventual value

  Example:
  "Possiamo parlare con le persone che eventualmente siano disponibili."

After the following kinds of impersonal forms:

• absolute impersonal verbs

  Example:
  "Bisogna che tu decida adesso cosa vuoi fare."

  Other absolute impersonal verbs: occorre che, conviene che, sembra che, pare che, basta che, succede che, dispiace che.

• some impersonal verbs with the particle si

  Example:
  "Si dice che tu sia arrivata ieri."

  Other impersonal verbs: si racconta che, si crede che, si pensa che, si scrive che.

• from impersonal forms formed by the verb to be with a noun or an adjective

  Example:
  "Non è bello che tu dica queste cose."

  Other impersonal forms: è brutto che, è logico che, è chiaro che, è giusto che, è difficile che, è il momento che, è una fortuna che.
