SUBORDINATE CONCESSIVE CLAUSES

The subordinate concessive clauses indicate a concession that doesn’t produce the desired effect in the supporting.

Example:
" Marco va a passeggiare nel parco benché il tempo non sia bello. "

In the explicit form these clauses can be introduced by:

• a conjunction  (sebbene, nonostante, benché, quantunque, malgrado)

  Example:
  "Anna non riesce ad accendere il computer, malgrado abbia fatto un corso."

• a phrase  (nonostante che, per quanto, malgrado che, anche se, neanche se, nemmeno se)

  Example:
  "Marco ha telefonato ad Antonio anche se era tardi."

• some pronouns and indefinite adjectives  (chiunque, qualunque, qualunque cosa)

  Example:
  "Non cambieremo idea, qualunque cosa tu dica."

Attention:
In the explicit form these clauses usually use the subjunctive mood.
With the phrases anche se, neanche se, nemmeno se these clauses use the indicative.

Note:
These clauses follow the rules of time concordance.

In the implicit form these clauses are introduced by:

• a past participle  (preceded by benché, pure, per quanto, anche)

  Example:
  "Per quanto già visto questo è sempre un bel film."

• a gerundive  (preceded by pur(e))

  Example:
  "Pur lavorando molto, non abbiamo ancora finito la nostra relazione."

• per + infinitive + che + imperfect subjunctive of the verb fare

  Example:
  "Per mangiare che facesse Carlo aveva sempre fame."

Note:
These clauses can be contemporary to the supporting (with present infinitive and gerundive) or anterior (with infinitive, gerundive and past participle).
