CONCORDANCE OF THE NOUN

In Italian the noun is a variable part.

The noun can be:

• MASCULINE or FEMININE  (gender)
• SINGULAR or PLURAL  (number)

The noun gives the gender and the number to all the other variable parts it's connected to.

Examples:
"Bambino (Masc. Sing.) ---> Il (Masc. Sing.) bambino simpaticO (Masc. Sing.). "
"Bambina (Fem. Sing.) ---> La (Fem. Sing.) bambina simpaticA (Fem. Sing.). "

If the noun has the function of subject, it determines also the person of the verb.

Examples:
"Io (1 pers. sing.) ---> Io mangiO (1 pers. sing.). "
"Il bambino (3 pers. sing.) ---> Il bambino mangiA (3 pers. sing.). "

In Italian there are three families of nouns:

• nouns ending in -O
• nouns ending in -A
• nouns ending in -E
