CONCORDANCE OF THE VERBYou are here: syntax > sentence > concordance > verb
In Italian the verb is a variable part.
These are the aspects of the verb that can change: - the conjugation
(group -ARE, group -ERE, group -IRE)
- the mood
(indicative, subjunctive, conditional, imperative, infinite, gerund, participle)
- the time
(present, past, future with different kinds and forms)
- the form
(active, passive or reflexive)
- the person
(1st, 2nd, 3rd singular o 1st, 2nd, 3rd plural)
Attention:
Not all the moods of the verb change person: the indefinite modes (infinite, gerund and participle) have only one form.
Examples:
"
Andando a casa vedo Antonio.
"
"
Andando a casa vediamo Antonio.
"
In both the sentences, the verb 'andare' is gerundive and has the same form, but its subject in the first example is IO, in the second example is NOI.
From this point of view verbs can be divided in: - finite
(indicative, subjunctive, conditional, imperative have forms that allow to understand the person of the subject - explicit form)
- indefinite
(infinitive, gerund and participle have forms that don't allow to understand the person of the subject - implicit form)
