PHRASEOLOGICAL VERBS

The phraseological verbs connect to other verbs and form particular verbal expressions.
Some of these verbs act more or less as auxiliary verbs: they connect to an infinitive of a verb.

Example:
" Marco fa preparare il progetto ai suoi colleghi. "
In this example the verb 'fare' connects to the infinitive of the verb 'preparare' modifying the meaning.

These are the most important simple phraseological verbs:

• darsi

  Example:
  "Antonio si dà da fare per convincere Maria a uscire con lui."

• mettersi

  Example:
  "Marco si mette a riordinare la sua scrivania."

• fare

  Example:
  "Il Direttore fa chiamare Antonio nel suo ufficio."

• lasciare

  Example:
  "La mamma lascia giocare i bambini per un'altra mezz'ora."

There are also some phraseological verbs that define an aspect of the verb.

Example:
" Antonio sta per uscire di casa. "
In this case the phraseological verb 'stare per' indicates an action that starts in a very near future.

These are the most important:

• stare, venire, andare + simple gerundive  (indicates a momentary action)

  Example:
  "Adesso sto preparando gli esercizi per i miei studenti."

• stare per, essere sul punto di, essere in procinto di, accingersi a + infinitive  (indicate a near future)

  Example:
  "Prendi l'ombrello: sta per piovere."
