USE OF THE IMPERFECT SUBJUNCTIVE

Is a simple tense of the subjunctive mood, it has regular and irregular forms.

These are the main uses of the imperfect subjunctive:

• indicates an action contemporary to another action in the past requiring the subjunctive

  Example:
  "Non aveva immaginato che tu arrivassi in quel momento."

• expresses the hypothesis of a possible hypothetical period (II kind)

  Example:
  "Se ti andasse, potremmo andare a cena insieme sabato."

• in the independent sentences has desiderative meaning

  Example:
  "Smettesse una buona volta di piovere!"
