USE OF THE SUBJUNCTIVE PLUPERFECT

Is a compound tense of the subjunctive mood.
Is formed by the subjunctive imperfect of the auxiliary verb (avere o essere) and the past participle.

These are the main uses of the subjunctive pluperfect:

indicates an action anterior to another one in the past requiring the subjunctive
Example:
"Tutti credevano che tu fossi già partito."
expresses the condition of an unreal hypothetical period (III kind)
Example:
"Se avessi saputo che eri a Roma, ti sarei venuta a trovare."
